Emotional ceremony to pay respects and open condolence book in memory of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in Italy

As reported by the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Rome, the Vietnamese Embassy in Italy conducted a solemn memorial service on July 25 to honor General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, Nguyen Phu Trong. A condolence book was also opened for attendees to pay their respects.

Numerous international friends and members of the Vietnamese community residing, studying, and working in Italy gathered to pay their respects and say goodbye to the distinguished leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

In the early morning, the Vietnamese Embassy in Italy and other representative agencies, led by Ambassador Duong Hai Hung, gathered in a solemn and heartfelt ceremony to remember General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. The officials and staff observed a moment of silence to honor his legacy.

Ambassador Duong Hai Hung, in his message in the condolence book, expressed profound gratitude for General Secretary Trong’s lifetime of dedication. He wrote: “I am immensely thankful for your life’s work in guiding our nation to its current foundation, potential, status, and international prestige. You are a remarkable and distinguished leader of the Vietnamese people, a great thinker of our time, a person of the highest and most noble qualities.”

Ambassador Duong Hai Hung noted that in the context of Vietnam-Italy relations, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong will be remembered for establishing the strategic partnership between the two nations. His noble ideals will continue to inspire, particularly through the Italian translation of the book “Some Theoretical and Practical Issues on Socialism and the Path to Socialism in Vietnam.”

In her message of condolence, Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Maria Tripodi highlighted the significant contributions of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. She noted that he played a key role in elevating the bilateral relations between Italy and Vietnam to a Strategic Partnership during his 2013 visit and recognized the progress in cooperation between the two nations since then.

Following the opening of the condolence book, numerous representatives from diplomatic missions, including those from China, Cuba, Japan, South Korea, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Syria, and the Vatican, came to offer their respects and sign the book in honor of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. The delegations conveyed their condolences on his passing and acknowledged his notable contributions to Vietnam’s development, as well as his efforts in fostering and strengthening Vietnam’s relations with other countries.

“Myanmar Ambassador to Italy, Ms. Hmway Hmway Khyne, who had the opportunity to talk with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong during her working visit to Vietnam, wrote in the condolence book: ‘We are deeply saddened by the passing of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong. We would like to share our condolences with the leadership, people of Vietnam and the General Secretary’s family for this great loss. General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s tireless efforts and invaluable contributions to peace, stability and prosperity in the region and the world will continue to inspire future generations.’

Speaking to VNA reporters, the Indonesian Embassy in Italy, Minister Counselor Eko Himawan, expressed: ‘We would like to share with the Vietnamese people and the family of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong about this loss. The General Secretary is famous for his anti-corruption campaign and I think this is the basis for Vietnam’s future development. His contributions and dedication will always be remembered.’

Also coming to pay their respects and sign the condolence book in memory of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong were representatives of Italian parties and many Italian friends who love Vietnam.

The official communique of the Italian Communist Party expressed its deep condolences on the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, stressing that his legacy for the international communist movement is very significant. The approach pursued by Vietnam represents a multipolar vision, which is increasingly necessary to face the challenges affecting humanity. In commemorating General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Italian communists will strive to be worthy of the humanistic and political legacy of the Vietnamese leader.”

Myanmar’s Ambassador to Italy, Ms. Hmway Hmway Khyne, who had previously met General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong during a visit to Vietnam, wrote in the condolence book: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the leadership, the people of Vietnam, and the General Secretary’s family for this great loss. His tireless efforts and invaluable contributions to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and the world will continue to inspire future generations.”

Minister Counselor Eko Himawan from the Indonesian Embassy in Italy also expressed his condolences to VNA reporters, stating: “We share the sorrow of the Vietnamese people and the family of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. He was renowned for his anti-corruption efforts, which I believe laid the foundation for Vietnam’s future growth. His dedication and contributions will be long remembered.”

Representatives from Italian political parties and many Italian friends of Vietnam also came to pay their respects and sign the condolence book in memory of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

The official statement from the Italian Communist Party expressed deep sympathy over the loss of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, highlighting the importance of his legacy to the international communist movement. It emphasized that Vietnam’s approach represents a necessary multipolar vision to address global challenges. In honoring General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Italian communists pledged to uphold the humanistic and political legacy he left behind.

Mr. Maurizio Acerbo, General Secretary of the Italian Communist Refoundation Party, conveyed the condolences of both the Italian people and his party, stating: “We extend our deepest sympathies to the Party, State, and people of Vietnam on the loss of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. His lifelong dedication to the people, peace, prosperity, development, and international cooperation, particularly his commitment to safeguarding independence, will continue to inspire future generations. We are committed to enhancing the bonds between our parties.”

On the morning of July 25, numerous representatives from Vietnamese associations and overseas Vietnamese families gathered to pay their respects and offer incense in memory of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Vu Thi Bich Diep, President of the Vietnamese Student Association in Italy, shared: “As young students, we hold close the guidance of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who advised us to embrace revolutionary values with humility, simplicity, and a spirit of progress. He encouraged us to maintain pure hearts and develop lofty ambitions to contribute to our country’s future. We are committed to upholding his teachings and honoring the trust placed in us by the Party, Uncle Ho, and the Vietnamese people.”

The memorial service and the condolence book at the Vietnamese Embassy in Italy will continue until July 26.
